Graces5 Is Revolutionizing Healthy Eating

Lemon Chicken served with organic vegetables at Graces5.
When most people think of healthy eating, they think of eliminating fats, eating more fruits and vegetables, skipping deep-fried food and not having ice cream for breakfast. But to truly eat healthy, you have to go much deeper into what the foods contain. Oddly, many foods we have eaten for centuries are making us sick because many people have food allergies. In Redmond, Washington, Graces5 is revolutionizing healthy eating.

Graces5 is the brainchild of Timothy and Katherine Sharpe. The Sharpe's know how important healthy eating is because it has literally saved Timothy's life and the life of their daughter, Sarah.

Timothy is a two time cancer survivor. Although he's had a variety of treatments for his cancer, he attributes staying cancer-free to his diet.

In 2009, Sarah was diagnosed at age 3 with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). After chemotherapy, the Sharpe's made some serious changes to Sarah's diet and she is now a healthy and happy 5 year-old.

Creating the new normal in healthy eating.

Graces5 targeted the stealth ingredients in foods that give many people problems with their health. At Graces5, you'll find a menu free of gluten, peanuts, dairy or soy. To accomplish that, you normally have to go to a traditional Vegan diet. Not so at Graces5. You will find raw food menu selections, but you'll also find Chicken Marsala and Lemon Chicken - the two top sellers at the restaurant.

The Sharpe's philosophy is best summed up by this paragraph from the Graces5 website:
Graces 5 supports a wide variety of healthy food choices including organic, local, and sustainable initiatives. We support the dietary recommendations of the Celiac, Diabetic, and Autistic communities and look forward to adding to this list. We appreciate the alkalizing, low-glycemic, low-fat, and high-fiber diet paradigms. And we aim to provide a place where the whole family can afford to eat out on a regular basis.
Their menu is diverse enough to satisfy a serious Vegan, but also a person who still likes to eat things that used to run around or swim.

"We wanted healthy alternatives without skimping on taste. Too much of the healthy food alternatives force you to eat something you wouldn't normally eat or force you to eat something you are familiar with, but has no flavor. We are very aware of how critical taste is to our customers," said Timothy.

When a person suffers from a broad range of food allergies, dining out can be a torture test. They have to play 20 questions with the server about the menu items, "Does it have this? Does it have that?" Graces5 allows customers to fill out a profile sheet of their allergies. That information is entered into their computer. The next time the customer comes back to the restaurant, the Graces5 staff will already know what menu items to steer the customer away from.

Graces5 also offers gluten-free beers and wines. Hard liquor is not available.

"Our goal is to make healthy eating the new normal," said Timothy. "If we can prove to people that healthy eating can be flavorful and affordable, we hope to take this concept nationwide."

In nice weather, enjoy the comfortable patio at Graces5
Graces5 is open seven days a week, serving lunch from 11:30 - 2 pm, and dinner from 5 - 9 pm.

The restaurant seats 35 inside and when the weather is cooperative, 35 more seats are on the spacious patio.

Graces5 can accommodate parties and special events. You can even get their food to go.

Less than 10 miles from downtown Seattle, Graces5 offers people who have struggled with food allergies a place to dine, relax, socialize and not have to worry about what they are eating.

The next rainy day in the Northwest, make a trip to Redmond and see how Graces5 is revolutionizing healthy eating.
