|Are we taking a step back with racism?|
Social media for the purpose of organizing people with a common objective has come center stage this year with unrest around the world. Protesters in Egypt, Syria, Tunisia and other Middle Eastern countries have used Facebook and Twitter to organize for political reasons. In the UK, mobs organized through the use of social media, wreaked havoc and caused millions of dollars of property damage, for no apparent reason.
In the U.S., this summer has seen the rise of an urban phenomenon where social media is used to organize black youths for the sole purpose of terrorizing whites and businesses.
Outbreaks of violence have occurred in Cleveland, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago and other cities. In Milwaukee, four police officers were hospitalized trying to calm a group of black teens at a fair.
In Cleveland, a number of fairs and festivals have been canceled due to fears of flash mobs coming to the events. A few years ago, the long-running E. 185th St. Festival was destroyed and discontinued after black youth gangs terrorized participants, robbed vendors and destroyed property.
In Maryland, a group of black youths, organized on social media, descended upon a convenience store. Thirty of them entered the store while it was open and openly looted the story without any sense of remorse.
In Cleveland, members of city council drafted a law that would add a secondary offense to any charges if social media was used to organize the chaos, said black city councilman Zachary Reed on the Mike Trivisonno Show on WTAM, 1100 AM today. "Mayor Frank Jackson vetoed the law," said Reed.
"We are seeing black teens specifically targeting whites in these flash mobs," Reed commented. "Most of the participants in these flash mobs are under 18." Reed said that beyond any laws they can draft, parents need to take responsibility for what their children are doing. "You need to know what they're doing on Facebook. You need to know what they are doing on Twitter. You need to know what they are doing on email."
Reed also added, "We can't seem to see any other motivation for these flash mobs than to cause chaos."
"Is racism headed in the wrong direction?" Trivisonno asked Reed. "I think we're taking a step back," Reed replied.
Reported on FoxNews.com August 10, 2011:
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, who recently imposed a stricter curfew in response to the city's latest attack, addressed black youths directly from the pulpit of his church on Sunday, reportedly saying, “You have damaged your own race.”
"If you want …anybody else to respect you and not be afraid when they see you walking down the street, then leave the innocent people who are walking down the street minding their own damn business. Leave them alone," Nutter told a mostly black congregation at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
