|Mr. Wonderful's The Local Joe special - $2.99|
For breakfast on the east side of Cleveland, actually, in Euclid, you can skip the Golden Arches, leave Wendy to be an old maid and tell the Burger King he ain't got no clothes. You need to get yourself over to Mr. Wonderful's Chicken & Waffles. Their slogan on their logo says, "His food shall be called wonderful." And it is. And the price is wonderful too.
I used to hang out at the Lake Shore Coffee Shop, which is next door to Mr. Wonderful's, to use their wifi signal and drink espresso. But the Lake Shore Coffee Shop is a dump. It's not clean and the service is mediocre. Their food offerings are actually scary. It's owned by a cheap Insurance and Real Estate agent who is too cheap to pay for a phone or fix things that need repair, like their freezer. They actually bring in bags of ice for drinks that require ice. Cigarette butts pile up out front of the coffee shop. It was so bad, I'd go out and sweep them up every day. I've since made my move to Dunkin Donuts, a block away. They have free wifi and free refills on coffee all day. Plus, they have some fun entertaining customers that come and go while I spend hours a day writing and tweeting. But you can only eat so many donuts. Sometimes, a man has to have a real meal.
Several eateries have come and gone in the Mr. Wonderful's location at 21950 Lake Shore Blvd. None of the previous owners seemed to have the right food at the right price for this lower middle class neighborhood. However, Pastor Ken, head of Life Changes International Church in East Cleveland bought the empty restaurant about six months ago. He's offering a broad selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner fare at extremely reasonable prices.
Menu items include Polish Boys, Waffles, Stuffed Spuds, Chicken, Sandwiches, Seafood, Shrimp, Pork, Corned Beef and Turkey. Lunch specials are served Monday thru Friday from 10:30 am to 2 pm and all of the items are between $5.49 and $5.99.
It's amazing what a good coat of paint can do for a place and a happy welcoming staff. Floyd was working the grill and Darinda was taking orders. They were so glad to see me come in. And I was glad to dine on what they had to offer.
My breakfast special, called The Local Joe, featured 2 eggs any style, 2 sausage or 2 bacon strips, a healthy serving of breakfast potatoes and Texas Toast - all for $2.99. I think a smashed Egg McMuffin goes for about the same price.
Mr. Wonderful's is still building its customer base and needs all the referrals it can get. I'd love to see this place stay open for some time to come.
Hours are: Monday thru Wednesday 8:30 am to 9:00 pm, Thursday thru Saturday 8:30 am to 11:00 pm. Closed Sunday. Pastor Ken has a higher calling on that day. You can call them at 216-289-9233. Or check out their website www.mrwonderfuls.com.
Something I just noticed on the menu where the address is, it says, "Mr. Wonderful's Chicken & Waffles - Home of the Sweet Jesus Glaze. You gotta love that, oh Lordy, Lordy - I'm full and feelin' the spirit. And I want you to feel the spirit, too. Tell your friends, email this post to all your friends in Cleveland and they'll be thankful you did.
Why? Because they'll find the best breakfast special in all of Cleveland and it's only $2.99.
