|What was I thinking?|
I'd love to know who the opening act was. Being a former stand-up comic, the curiosity is driving me crazy. Sheen on the other hand, broke one of the cardinal rules of live performance - you have to deliver.
I was always taught that even Jerry Seinfeld only had about a five minute grace period on stage, just because he was Jerry Seinfeld. After those five minutes were up, he better be funny or people would be pissed. And people were pissed in Detroit.
A crowd of 5,100 packed the Fox Theater in Detroit. After the opening act was booed from the stage, Sheen came on stage to a loud ovation. His "goddesses" came out and kissed each other, which was good for more excitement. The goddesses then burned a "Two and a Half Men" T-shirt. After that, the show went downhill.
I've been reading many of the different reports. Sheen tried some bad, incoherent one-liners, he had nonsensical video clips; and he even read a poem that basically insulted people from Detroit. At one point, the crowd started chanting, "refund, refund."
What did they think was going to happen?
We've already heard all the ranting about the trolls and his Tiger Blood. We've seen his disjointed ramblings on his streaming TV show on the Internet. What more was there to be had?
Anyone that does a live stage show knows it takes months and months of preparation. You can't just wing it. Dennis Leary could pull off an hour of ranting because that was the act he did for years and years.
Sheen's rants are so narcissistic that no one really cares. It's Charlie whining about Charlie. He's not changing the world or giving us insight into our own lives. He's bitching about the way the world has responded to a drunken, drug-addled filthy rich maniac. Not many of us can relate to that kind of personality, or would want to.
Early reports are that the Sunday show in Chicago is going a bit better. Producers and Sheen have done some fast shuffling to bring more interesting content to the half-baked show. We'll see how the rest of the tour goes.
Bur for now, Charlie Sheen's Torpedo Of Truth Tour bombed in Detroit. Not a good way to make a first impression.
